Skins (Häute)

Paper, responsive to humidity and temperature, evokes the human skin. After closely observing the texture of skin, I transfer its delicate lines onto paper through drawing. I then fold the paper by hand, following these traces, transforming the organic folds of the skin into new sculptural structures on the surface of the paper.

In German, the word “Falten” refers both to the folds or wrinkles that form on the skin and to the physical act of folding something. For me, this dual meaning becomes an important starting point for the work. The lines that naturally form on the skin and the act of folding paper to create form overlap with one another: traces of the body are transformed into sculptural gestures, and these gestures generate new forms.

The title of the series, “Häute” (skins), refers to the outer layer of the body while also carrying a linguistic ambiguity through its resemblance in sound to the German word “Heute” (today). This phonetic similarity connects the body to the present, allowing each fold to be read as a trace left by a particular moment. Through the process in which skin, gesture, and material come into contact with one another, the work explores the boundary between the body and matter.
